Anlaşılıyorki; Rusların otokhton Kafkas mensuplarına verdiği bu isim, geleneksel kıyafetlerinin bir parçası olan  ve diğer toplumlardan çok belirgin bir şekilde ayırd edici tasarıma sahip "Kalpak"(genellikle siyah renkte üretilir)  sebebiyledir. 

Farsça;



Çer= Asker. Kes(ler)= Kişi(ler),Kimse(ler),İnsan(lar).
"Çerkes" Arabça/Farsça "çer" ve "kes" kelimelerinden oluşan bileşik kelimedir. (Örnek; Her-kes.) Kılık ve kıyafetleri adeta askeri bir üniforma gibi tek tip olmasından dolayı Kafkasyalı (Adğe,Abhaz ve Oset gibi)insanlar, araplar tarafından bu şekilde tanımlanmışlardır. Osmanlı döneminde ise, "Kafkas" tanımı, Ortadoğu ve Balkanlarda yoğun olarak kullanılan Arapça etkisiyle tamamen "Çerkes" olarak değiştirilmiştir.
            Uluslararası literatürde sadece beyaz ırkın "Kafkas" olarak tanılanması tamamen yanlıştır. "Kafkas" tanımı, Nuh Tufanı'ndan beri yaşayan tüm insanları kapsamaktadır. Kafkasya'da yaşayan yerli halk(Adğe,Abhaz ve Oset) "Ari Kafkas"tır. Gerek yaşadıkları coğrafya, gerekse dil, kıyafet ve yaşam tarzı(kültür) bakımından hiç değişime uğramadan günümüze kadar kendilerini en iyi koruyabilmişlerdir. Diğerleri ise dağılmış, değişime uğramış ve çok karışmış melez toplumlardır.            "Çerkes" kavramının "Kafkas" kavramının yerine kullanılması, yukarıda açıkladığım, bu iki kelimenin anlamlarının nereden geldiği konusundaki sebeplere bakıldığında, tarihi doğru kavrama açısından çok büyük hatalara düşülmesine yol açar.
